Clinical Approach to Responding to Medical Illnesses

Dr. Venarde has worked with individuals responding to serious medical illness since graduate school, when he trained in the oncology department and hospice program at the JFK Medical Center in Edison, NJ, and at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s community mental health program for the aging. During his years in private practice and in university mental health, Dr. Venarde has continued to focus on work with adults – including those in the college setting – facing medical illnesses.

Based on training and experience, Dr. Venarde’s clinical approach focuses on an active response to the challenges of serious medical illness, drawing on available resources (internal and external), developing clear and practical strategies for self-care, and facing medical illness in a forthright, pragmatic and determined manner.

When appropriate, Dr. Venarde works collaboratively with family members, friends, and other professionals, including treating physicians, to optimize care.
